Bokgil or Oega Sotbap: Abalone, Bulgogi or Steak?

Bokgil and Oega are two sotbap (rice-pot) restaurants a short walk apart near Hwangridan-gil. Bokgil centres on abalone and Hanwoo bulgogi, with sets that add grilled fish, while Oega adds steak, salmon and pollack roe. I compared them using current menu prices, public reviews and my own food-preference record.

This piece is based on reviews and my taste test, not a visit. Menus, prices and hours come from Naver Place (Bokgil’s menu updated 23 September 2026, Oega’s 26 January 2026, both checked 20 October 2026) and Gyeongju tourism information. Prices can change, so the bill on the day may differ.

Bokgil’s abalone and bulgogi rice pots

Bokgil’s Gyeongju main branch is at 71 Cheomseong-ro. Abalone sotbap, abalone porridge and Hanwoo-bulgogi sotbap are KRW 18,000 each. Grilled mackerel is KRW 15,000 and grilled abalone (six pieces) is KRW 24,000. For two, there is an economy set at KRW 49,000 (two mains plus grilled mackerel) and a special set at KRW 61,000 (two signature mains, grilled mackerel and four grilled abalone).

Two individual Bokgil rice pots come to KRW 36,000. If you want grilled mackerel as well, the economy set (KRW 49,000) costs KRW 2,000 less than the same items ordered separately (KRW 51,000). Which rice pots can be chosen inside a set wasn’t listed, so I couldn’t confirm that.

Bokgil’s reviews often say ‘neat’

I read the five reviews visible for Bokgil on Polle. Three described the meal as neat or tidy, and others mentioned a generously filled rice pot, several kinds of salted seafood on the side and portions big enough without adding grilled fish. One found the taste just average. I didn’t read Oega’s reviews separately this time, so I won’t compare the two on taste from reviews.

Oega’s steak and seafood toppings

Oega’s Hwangridan-gil main branch is at 7 Sajeong-ro 57beon-gil. On its Naver menu, steak and salmon sotbap are KRW 18,000 each, abalone sotbap KRW 17,000, Hanwoo-bulgogi sotbap KRW 16,000 and pollack-roe sotbap KRW 15,000. Shiitake menbosha is KRW 8,000 as a side. Bokgil has no steak rice pot, so this is where the two menus differ most.

For two people, two abalone rice pots are KRW 36,000 at Bokgil and KRW 34,000 at Oega. Two Hanwoo-bulgogi pots are KRW 36,000 at Bokgil and KRW 32,000 at Oega. At Oega, one steak and one salmon come to KRW 36,000, or KRW 44,000 with the menbosha. These are menu-price sums, so the actual bill may differ.

Afternoon breaks at each restaurant

Both restaurants take an afternoon break. According to Naver Place (checked 20 October), Bokgil is open daily 10:30–21:00 with a 16:00–17:00 break and last orders at 20:10. Oega is open daily 11:00–20:30 with a 15:00–17:00 break and last orders at 19:50. Between 15:00 and 16:00, only Bokgil is serving. Neither has its own parking; Oega takes Naver reservations and Bokgil uses a Tabling waitlist.

My taste record points to the meat pots

My food-preference test record (110 choices) leans toward meat over seafood as a main ingredient, and slightly toward rich flavours. So the steak and bulgogi pots catch my eye before abalone or salmon. I also tend to avoid heat, which suits a mild rice pot.

I’d start with Oega’s steak sotbap

If I had to pick one, I’d order the steak sotbap at Oega. Bokgil doesn’t have one, and steak suits my meat-leaning record. For a late lunch around 15:00, though, Bokgil is the one still open, and there I’d choose the Hanwoo-bulgogi pot. If the person with me loves abalone, it’s on both menus, so one pot of it to share would work at either place.
