Hyanghwajeong or Hwangnam: Yukhoe Mulhoe and Rice Dishes

Both Hyanghwajeong and Hwangnam Bibimbap on Hwangridan-gil list yukhoe mulhoe, so I went back and forth for a while on a day I wanted raw beef. I haven’t been to either yet, so I read 18 public visitor reviews and set them against my taste test record.

My answer first: for two people, I’d go to Hwangnam Bibimbap for the yukhoe-and-galbi bibimbap. On my own it changes. Hwangnam’s bibimbap comes in portions for two to three, so for a single bowl Hyanghwajeong is much easier.

Hyanghwajeong: the cockle bibimbap comes up first

The dish mentioned most in Hyanghwajeong’s reviews wasn’t the mulhoe but the seasoned cockle bibimbap. Several reviewers praised the seasoning and the generous toppings, though two or so said the sheer amount of cockles got a bit much towards the end, or that they bit on a piece of shell.

The yukhoe bibimbap was mostly described as reliably good, while opinions on the yukhoe mulhoe were more mixed. One review called the broth sweet and sour, and another wished the somyeon noodles didn’t stiffen so quickly in the cold broth. Two reviews mentioned enjoying the beef soup served on the side. On the downside, people mentioned long queues, tables set close together and slightly tourist-area prices. Orders are taken while you queue, so food comes out soon after you sit down, according to one review. The listing says there’s no parking.

Hwangnam: one big bowl to mix together

Hwangnam’s menu works differently. Bibimbap with a single topping—yukhoe, cockles or galbi—and the two-topping versions, yukhoe-and-cockle, yukhoe-and-galbi and cockle-and-galbi, are all listed as portions for two to three. Reviews describe the Hwangnam Special as having all three. Only the yukhoe mulhoe is a single-serving dish.

There were only eight reviews. Two said the galbi was nicely grilled and two said the cockles didn’t taste fishy, and one person had gone specifically for the yukhoe mulhoe. Others found the rice a little dry and crumbly, the yukhoe portion small and bland, or the cockles slightly spicy. A couple of people liked the courtyard for photos.

What my taste record points to

My taste test record (110 choices) leans towards meat over seafood as a main ingredient, welcomes a little sourness, and leans away from strong spice and towards less sweetness. Galbi and raw beef in one bowl fit the meat side of that. Since one review found Hwangnam’s cockles slightly spicy, the galbi combination sits more comfortably with me than the cockle one.

That’s why my pick at Hwangnam is the yukhoe-and-galbi bibimbap. A chilled mulhoe suits my liking for sourness, but with the broth described as sweet and sour, I can’t say yet how sweet it is, so I’d treat it as an extra on a hot day rather than the main order.

At Hyanghwajeong I’d choose the yukhoe bibimbap. It drew the most consistently good reviews and fewer mixed opinions than the mulhoe. If you love cockles, the seasoned cockle bibimbap had the strongest reviews there, and if you want a little of everything, there’s the Hwangnam Special.

What I’d order

For two, I’d share one yukhoe-and-galbi bibimbap at Hwangnam and add a yukhoe mulhoe if we wanted something cold. For three, the Hwangnam Special would work too, though one review said it felt small when shared alongside other dishes, so I’d order a little more than the headcount suggests.

On my own, it’s Hyanghwajeong: one yukhoe bibimbap, which comes with beef soup on the side, makes an easy solo meal. Since the queue can be long, I’d try to avoid the peak lunch hour.

Good to know before you go

Hyanghwajeong is at 17 Sajeong-ro 57beon-gil, Gyeongju. The VISIT GYEONGJU listing, checked on 18 October 2026, shows 11:00–21:00 with a 15:00–17:00 break, yukhoe mulhoe and yukhoe bibimbap at KRW 14,900 each, seasoned cockle bibimbap at KRW 29,900 and seafood pajeon at KRW 15,000. One mulhoe and one yukhoe bibimbap come to KRW 29,800. There’s no parking, and Catchtable reservations are available.

Hwangnam Bibimbap is on the ground floor of 11 Cheomseong-ro 73beon-gil. Tourism information checked on 15 September 2026 lists 10:00–21:00 with a 15:30–17:00 break, and takeaway is available. A public menu without a clear date shows the two-topping bibimbaps at KRW 32,000, the Hwangnam Special at KRW 36,000 (both for two to three) and yukhoe mulhoe at KRW 13,000, so these prices may have changed. If you’re going between 3 and 5 pm, a quick call would put my mind at ease.
